Vocational Training
Maison
de Lumiere is in the process of developing a dynamic vocational training
program that will allow children to start learning practical job skills
that will significantly improve their chances for survival once they
leave Maison de Lumiere.
Programs in farming, welding,
auto mechanics, sewing, fish farming, and cell phone repair are just
a few of the areas being taught to the children to supplement their
formal education.
In addition, micro-businesses
are being established to help the children to understand the basics
of business management skills and to help provide additional employment
options upon graduating out of the home. The microbusinesses will also
help finance the operation of the home. Currently, a used cell phone
business we launched has helped fund education of all our children.
A chicken egg business is also underway.
With 80% unemployment in
Haiti, it is our belief that the more skills the children can learn
the better.
